5/15/2025 Fishing Report

The fishing has been quite good recently.  A big slug of rain on Friday help keep the steelheading alive for another week and the saltwater is heating up.  People fishing for steelhead reported seeing a decent number of cutts and Dollies.  So even if you weren't into your target species, you were catching fish.  Small fry patterns have been the best, but don't forget to have a couple Squirmy Wormies in your box.  The beaches have started to show a glimmer of consistency this week.  Anglers are still having good tides and then not seeing anything the next day, but more frequently folks are running into fish.  Bracketing the low tide is our favorite time to target the Gastineau Channel spots (Sheep Creek, under Juneau-Douglas bridge, the avalanche path).  Start with small patterns such as Epoxy Mini Minnows and go larger if needed.  Try and mix of natural and attractor colors.

The Remember, Peterson Creek, the salt chuck and the saltwater within 200 yards of the mouth are closed to all fishing.  That means absolutely no flies or lures in the water for any species of fish.  This closure lasts through the month of June to protect a struggling run of steelhead.  Please respect the closure and do not fish out here.

Thanks to all of you who came out to the fly-fishing portion of this year's Becoming an Outdoor Woman with ADF&G.  It's always great to see the local ladies getting into fly-fishing.  If you missed out on BOW, we will still be offering fly-casting classes through the summer.

Tonight is the annual Trout Unlimited/AFFG Community Casting Night at 6pm at Twin Lakes.  Come get some tips, meet some other anglers or demo some killer rods.  We will have all our 8wt lines out to test also.  If you are looking for a new line on your current rod this is a great time to really feel how different line cast.

As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports.  If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way!  You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com.  Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release.  Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly, pinch your barbs and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.

See you on the water!
